Governments and their armies Need actual truth on occasion in order to survive Survival is one motive that can sometimes trump profit Governments and academia briefly insist And for a time, truth is frantically exposed Myths come crashing down But inevitably, fear for survival subsides Wars end, or enemies become too weak to threaten The profit motive quickly retakes the reigns Free science slinks back underground Truth will still occasionally bubble up But peacetime course corrections Often takes decades or even centuries With unnecessary misery for society in the interim Every generation is imprinted To accept the notion as a form of faith That their modern science isn't like this That today's scientific institutions Possess an ethical and intrinsic desire To pursue truth for the good of humanity That our governments monitor and enforce these ethics That our leaders understand enough to recognize Snake oil masquerading as science when they see it That our foolish ancestors were easy marks That we've evolved beyond that That we won't get fooled again Believe this at your peril. If you don't see the fools all around you, perhaps the fool is you Generational hubris is the poison That kills our skepticism Society has been fooled over and over By for-profit faux-science based fads Since humanity first struggled to understand the world Progress has been stifled and delayed tremendously Causing untold suffering throughout the ages Endangering society Particularly when accurate, insightful, decisive action Is required for survival If society ever hopes to break this cycle of stasis and misery Where only wars and calamities break molds Something different needs to be tried Society must find a way to protect science From the motives of power and greed From the bullying corruption of popular opinion From even the bias of what humanity hopes and fears
