Q&A

Q: What is this "Major" chord and scale you speak of from which everything is built?

A: A major chord is the 1,3 and 5 of the major scale.  This chord sounds all profound and serious, like it really means business, no frills attached.  As for the major scale, luckily Julie Andrews offers us a snappy tune that's a good starter learning the basic major scale.Do(1)-Re(2)-Mi(3)-Fa(4)-So(5)-La(6)-Ti(7)-Do(8 and 1 of the next octave).  Check out Julie, she'll make it easier for you.

Q: What's all this about flats and sharps?

A: Using that major scale.  If you modify one of the notes down a half step, that's a Flat note annotated with a b as in Bb, or sometimes using the real text flat characters thusly:   or ط.  For Sharp, it's instead, up a half tone.  Sharp uses the #.  This leads to one of the trickiest things to understand in music annotation.  Different names for the same note.  An A# for example is the same as a Bb.  A D# is the same note as an Eb.

There is a tricky rule involving key signatures for whether in music a flat or a sharp scheme is supposed to be used.  Technically, it should be the same in the key signature - all sharps or flats.  But this rule is utterly ignored here and in almost all shorthand annotation one finds.  I think the reason being, after you learn a chord or note by name that's hard enough already, dangit.  Why make it harder learning another name for it too?

Anyway, for math reasons there are 2 sequences of notes in each octave that don't have in-between notes in a major scale.  Between the 3rd and 4th, and between the 7th and 8th.  This is why you don't have E#/Fb ever, or B#/Cb ever.  Why?  Physics . . . . just is.  This is what makes piano keyboards look like they do with 3 flat/sharp black keys then 2, then 3 then 2 on up the keyboard repeating at each octave.

Q: What is a minor?

A: 1) Keep away from kids if you can't tell what a minor is you pedo.  2) Flat 3rd of the major so 1,3b,5.  It's the sad, melancholy sounding one.  There is much more to the question involving what happens to the other notes in a "minor " scale.  There are several regionally named scale variations around the 2nd, 6th and 7ths.  For all though, to qualify as minor scale variation, just need that flat 3rd.

Q: What do the numbers after the letters on the chords represent?

A: These are called augmented chords as opposed to major or minor.  Chord naming is based on the major musical scale.  Each octave is 8 notes.  Numbers 1-7 are the notes to choose within that.  Numbers over 8 going into the next octave mean add note numbered in the scale.  To get to it subtract the octave's 8.  Why is this done?  This is done because 1- 3 are already used for hand position.

It breaks down like this in the annotation used here: Numbers 1-3 are used to reference hand position rather than notes on the major scale.  We switch to scale based numbers for the suspend "sus" 4th and the power chord 5th, where for both, the 3rd is not played.  6 is a straight add of the 6th in the scale to the 1st, 3rd and 5th major chord.  7 uses the flat 7th by default because blues is king.  Major 7ths (maj7) use the 7th of the major scale.  The add9 is where we have to subtract the octave 8 to include the 2nd of the scale.  This also then happens when you see add11 for the 4th or add13 for the 6th.

That probably sounds to non-mugicians like total gibberish.  Don't worry, knowing why a number translates to a specific hand position doesn't come up once a song is figured out.  As more songs are learned, commonalities start to emerge in the sequences and combinations.  This makes each new song easier than the last.  These "comfy chord changes" often seem uncannily made for the arrangement of the guitar specifically.  Possibly this is because a whole lot of songs originally were written on the guitar, even if the final presentation of them has no guitar at all.

Q: What's a bar chord?

A: It's where you use your flattened index finger to create a "Open" baseline by depressing all strings across the fretboard.  It hurts to do this, so this is usually not done to beginners, particularly those learning acoustic guitar where full bar chords can take time to build up to.  The most painful of all is the F, which seems appropriate.

Using this "bar" you can replicate the open E and open A based chords on up the fretboard.  This works the same way for minor chords and the numbered chords as well.  Once you master the bar most chords become easily available by simply moving your hand around leaving finger positions the same.  Note - Use of a capo is a the same basic function as the index finger bar, only instead it is mechanically holding the strings down.

Q: What model is that Martin Guitar you are playing?

A: Similar to the GPC 11-E, but I can't find any examples of this one sided fret board arrangement that I love in the current catalog.  Could be pretty rare I guess.

I can confirm, she was born in the fall of 2013 in Nazareth, PA.  Also, she's been modified with a different pick guard.  And the onboard tuner and bridge pickup were replaced with an Ernie Ball Bridge/Mic pickup.

Point of interest . . . the top side was purposely left with two largish open holes from the original tuner.  Since this side is what's facing me while playing, it pipes an extra bunch of sound straight at me.  I don't think I've ever heard an acoustic guitar that sounds as good to the player unplugged as this one, partially because of these "accidental" sound ports.

Q: Are the mp3's on the coverpile pages the same audio as on the videos?

A: Yes for Sentient Cement slideshow vids.  No for the JC and Timmy covers.  Sound on those vids is a combo of the original 16bit wav merged with a little (or sometimes a bunch) of the sound from the video itself.  This acts as the ultimate dry channel parallel, in theory.  In any case, each is a unique mix.  Coupled with the unique encoding on the platform hosting the vid, the end results can be quite divergent.  The mp3's however, are directly converted to mp3 from the wav, so are absent the room ambiance captured by the vid mics.
