Who are you people?
- Just three guys with families and day jobs. Inconspicuous. Normal.
But by night, under the
moon-glow shadow of the Arvada, Colorado front range, these hideous
creatures transform into something so shocking, so obscene, that the
very notion of it brings a chill. And what is this monster, this Jekyll's Hyde they become? They transform into three guys with
families, day jobs . . . and guitars. The horror. The horror.
What kind of music are you guys into? - Timmy (Tim Whitler),
Dave (Dave Rosset) and JC (JC Apking), the central constituents of
the band, have widely varied musical pasts including, but not
limited to, Eye Bleeding Thrash Metal, Smoky Back-alley Blues,
Grunge (Just like gramps used to make), Skate Punk Style Spoken
Word, and even Good ol' Fashioned Midwestern Rockabilly.
What happened when you mixed all that stuff together? - Since
the group's formation in late 2011, the various combinations of
instruments, styles and influences among the members have opened up
a universe of musical possibilities. The boys have been vigorously
exploring that universe ever since.
What's with the name Sentient Cement? - JC's son, Val,
originally came up with the Sentient part of it. He's into robots.
The idea of Sentient Cement came about when the guys were amazed
about how inspired and prolific every session was becoming. Their
surroundings seemed to be channeling into the band as they rolled
from jam to jam, inspiring and unifying them. Those surroundings,
notably, are the cement of the garage affectionately known "the Lair" where the bulk of jamming happens. Thus, the
moniker Sentient Cement came to be.
So then you guys went on a whirlwind 5 continent tour to spread the
gospel according to JC's garage? - Hell no, aren't you paying
attention? These guys have families to support and day jobs to be
toiling upon. Hats off to performers who can have families with
kids, handle hardcore tour dates, and still somehow look themselves
in the mirror. These guys made a collective decision to follow a
different path, at least until our progeny launch. In 2012
Sentient Cement began releasing original singles and playing
selected shows around town. Smaller places mostly. Over time the
focus shifted more to songwriting, which is the favorite thing to do
for the whole crew. Streaming live shows experimenting on
different platforms and unique slide show videos have been plugging
along behind the prime directive of recording, mixing, mastering and
releasing songs.
Did Sentient Cement do a full length release? - Actually 3 of
them so far. The debut full length album was
Foundation in 2013.
Within Stone was released at the end
of 2019. Take Shelter
was added to the grimoire in 2023. In the pipeline are:
Resonating, Under
The Stars, Future Boy & Photon Girl, and
Frolic
Uniformly. As we go, every song is released as a single
when we're done messing with it. The order they drop varies,
so any song from any of the planned albums might be next.
What's up with that? Why're you guys just lettin' folks hear all
your stuff for free on the website? - The band isn't frequently
out promoting the music. So if someone with an interest in what
Sentient Cement is doing takes the time to find the website, the
band wants to welcome them in, sit them down, perhaps give them
something to ward off the chill and then show them whatever they
want to see. Sentient Cement needs all the fans and support they can
get if they're ever to get attention without touring like crazy or
otherwise selling out. The
guys are creating this music more as an insane compulsion than as
any sort of organized business endeavor.
I'm a record company exec / news organization / film director
needing a soundtrack /
booking agent / stalker and I have a weird fascination with
these guys. Where can I find out more? - E - mail: jc @ sentientcement.com to reach out.
Greater efforts are being made to cull through a noisy inbox of late
so if you tried before and were missed, yer free to give it another
go.
Where do you see this going? - The plan is to doggedly persist in completing the next
4 albums. Expansion of social media
presence for song videos and streaming jams has been a recent priority. Dave
moved to Phoenix a while back, so full Sentient Cement sessions happened
less frequently for a time. Most recently was a 3 day monster
session autumn o' '23. There's a little rumor goin' round that
Dave might be headed back in a more regular capacity come spring o'
'24. If so, this could further stoke the Sentient engines into
higher gear. In the meantimes, JC & Timmy have been dropping
an avalanche of cover duets and the occasional odd solo offering. The bottom of the main page of our site has the latest
clips so check us out! |
